Does Politics Divide Workplaces? You Make The Call

A recent nationwide survey, conducted by Monster in July 2025, among more than 900 U.S. workers, reveals significant discomfort around political discussions in the workplace.

The survey found that a majority of employees are not comfortable talking about politics at work, indicating that the polarization seen in society is also affecting workplace relationships and culture.

Many participants express respect for differing political views, but political expression often leads to strained professional relationships and can influence job decisions. About a third of respondents admit to judging coworkers negatively based on political views, and more than half indicate they would consider leaving their job if their employer expressed political beliefs that conflicted with their own.

Despite the overall discomfort, a large proportion of survey respondents have participated in political discussions with colleagues, and many report feeling pressured to share their political beliefs, most frequently during informal conversations but also in meetings, client interactions, and discussions with managers or supervisors.

Employees generally take a cautious approach, with most believing political discussions should be avoided at work and that such discussions could negatively impact their careers.

A significant portion of respondents have never discussed politics with coworkers, and some would prefer to undergo unpleasant experiences rather than engage in political talk on the job.

Employers that value diversity should not disadvantage applicants or employees based on political beliefs. At the same time, organizations committed to inclusivity should seek to limit political discussions and debates in the workplace because such conversations can be divisive and disruptive to a respectful work environment.
