When does the federal FFCRA expire? I want to consider making changes to my employee handbook at the year's end.
Currently, the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) states that it ends "on December 31, 2020". This is the law (applies only to organizations with fewer than 500 employees) that provides for emergency paid sick leave (up to 80 hours) and expanded family and medical leave for pandemic-related reasons. It gives employees some economic relief while quarantining or isolating, for example.
It is not known whether Congress will extend the law. It is possible, because it was initially passed overwhelmingly by both Congressional chambers, and a study shows the leave helped avoid 400 new cases per state every day.
Visit with your legal counsel on possible changes to your leave policies. Whether the FFCRA is extended or not, the pandemic concerns and needs for quarantine and isolation leave will extend well into 2021.
